Forward Deployed Engineer at AWS: Role, Salary, and Interview (2026)

October 9, 2026

On June 30, 2026, AWS announced a $1 billion investment in a Forward Deployed Engineering organization and said it expects to embed “thousands” of engineers inside customers. It did not publish a hiring target. Per Techstrong’s coverage, the staffing comes from external hiring and internal transfers, at a company that has cut more than 30,000 corporate roles since late 2022 and now calls FDE one of its key hiring areas.

That is the biggest FDE commitment by a hyperscaler, and it landed with less noise than the OpenAI and Anthropic deployment launches. It deserves a closer read, because AWS is building the function the way Amazon builds everything: with a manager layer, level bands, and a clearance-gated government vertical.

What AWS says the org does

The pitch, written by Frontier AI VP Francessca Vasquez, is that model access is no longer the bottleneck. Deployment is. AWS engineers embed with a customer’s developers, security teams, and business stakeholders, build agentic systems on the customer’s data and governance rules inside the customer’s AWS environment, and then leave. The stated success metric is how fast customers launch AI capabilities and build in-house skill, not how long AWS stays.

Two details from the launch coverage stand out. Initial teams are about five or six people, and engagements run roughly 45 days. And the deliverables are explicitly handoff artifacts: documentation, runbooks, architectural guidance, and a governed knowledge graph left in the customer’s account. AWS says the approach cuts deployment from months to days, but hasn’t explained how it measured that. Named early customers include the NFL, NBA, Cox Automotive, Ricoh, the Allen Institute, and Southwest Airlines. AWS also cites BMW (fewer service disruptions across 23 million connected vehicles) and Lyft (driver support issues resolved 87% faster), which are company-reported figures.

The contrarian read: a 45-day, leave-behind model is closer to a fast Professional Services engagement than to Palantir’s years-long embeds. The difference AWS is selling is that the engineers write production code with AI agents and are accountable for reviewing it.

The postings

Our job board tracks four AWS FDE reqs. The senior IC posting (Job ID 10517491) is the clearest window into the bar.

Basic qualifications: 5+ years of professional software development, 5+ years leading design or architecture of systems, experience as a mentor or tech lead, and experience explaining technical concepts to senior stakeholders. The AI requirement is specific: experience “leading agentic and spec-driven development at production scale,” plus working knowledge of eval frameworks, agent tooling, RAG pipelines, and prompt engineering.

Preferred: AWS services experience, enterprise-scale AI/ML deployment, a founder or startup-builder background, and React, TypeScript, Python, or Go.

Responsibilities read like a tech lead’s: own multi-workstream programs, design multi-agent orchestration and enterprise retrieval systems, set production readiness and evaluation standards, build reusable accelerators, and help interview and mentor junior FDEs. This is not an entry-level seat. The role also requires 30–50% travel.

The org already has structure beyond the IC track: a manager role leading pods of 5–15 engineers, a Senior Security Engineer track (US citizenship required, up to 25% travel), and a US Government manager role in Arlington requiring an active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph. That last req has closed, but it shows AWS is segmenting FDE by vertical.

Compensation

AWS posts base ranges by metro. Sign-on payments and RSUs come on top and are not quantified.

Role Location Posted base
Sr FDE Mountain View / San Francisco $193,300–$261,500
Sr FDE New York $184,900–$250,200
Sr FDE Boston, Seattle, Bellevue, Arlington, Herndon $168,100–$227,400
FDE Manager Bay Area (top of band) up to $288K
Sr Security Engineer Multiple metros $175K–$248K

Against the 2026 salary guide, this is solid but not frontier-lab money. The posted bands are base only, so ask for the RSU grant and vesting schedule before comparing offers. A separate tracker, FDE Pulse, shows AWS manager-level bases from $201K to $350K as of April.

The interview: what we know and don’t

We could not find a published, FDE-specific AWS interview report, so treat anything specific as inference. What is documented is Amazon’s standard senior engineering loop, per interviewing.io: roughly six rounds, with one or more behavioral rounds, three coding rounds of medium-difficulty algorithms (30–40 minutes each), one system design round, and a hiring-manager round. A Bar Raiser, a trained interviewer from outside the team, can veto a hire along with the hiring manager. Leadership Principles questions appear in every round, and a weak showing there is “almost always a no-hire,” with Customer Obsession weighted most.

Whether the FDE loop swaps an algorithm round for a customer scenario or live-build exercise is unconfirmed. The sensible preparation is both: standard Amazon prep, plus stories about shipping agentic or RAG systems in someone else’s environment, with numbers. For general loop prep see the FDE interview guide.

Who should apply

This fits a senior engineer, ideally with AWS depth, who can run a five-person pod through a six-week delivery and wants a large-company brand and a visible career ladder. It is a worse fit if you want frontier-lab equity upside or open-ended embeds. If you are weighing it against a Solutions Architect path, read FDE vs Solutions Engineer.
