Forward Deployed Engineer at Okta: Role, Salary, and Interview (2026)
On Okta’s Q2 earnings call in August, management described revenue from its AI agent products as still immaterial for fiscal 2027, and said any real impact on the numbers is a fiscal 2028-and-beyond story. In the same quarter the company reported “dozens” of agentic deals, several over $1 million, and has since posted Forward Deployed Engineer roles at three levels: Senior, Principal, and a “Forward Deployment Engineer” tier above both on experience requirements. A company does not staff embedded engineers around a line item it considers a rounding error. It does so when it expects the line item to be the product.
That tension is the interesting thing about this role, and it is why Okta belongs on any FDE shortlist even though it is not a frontier lab.
The company behind the seat
Okta reported Q2 FY2027 (quarter ended July 31, 2026) revenue of $805 million, up 11% year over year, with current RPO of $2.585 billion, up 14%. It raised full-year guidance to $3.216–$3.226 billion, 10–11% growth. Professional services revenue fell 29% to $12 million as implementation work shifted to partners, which makes the FDE hire more notable: Okta is moving routine services out while hiring a small number of senior engineers in.
The product is not hypothetical. Okta for AI Agents has been generally available since May 2026 as a separate subscription. On August 24 the company made Agent SSO generally available inside core SSO plans at no extra cost. It registers agents that support Cross App Access, the open standard now incorporated as the Enterprise-Managed Authorization extension for the Model Context Protocol, as first-class identities and issues short-lived tokens instead of stored credentials. Okta’s own research says only 34% of organizations apply the same security controls to AI agents as to human workers. One anecdote from the earnings call: a customer’s detected Claude agent count went from 50 to 1,500 in a few weeks. A single data point, but it explains the pitch.
What the role actually is
The Principal posting (Singapore, posted October 8) says the engineer embeds with four to five strategic customers as technical partner for agent identity. The work: sit in the customer’s standups, design reviews, and incident reviews; build and deploy Okta’s agent security stack (Cross-App Access, Fine-Grained Authorization, MCP Gateway, agent client registration); brief CISOs, CIOs, and Chief AI Officers; and map deployments to OWASP’s Top 10 for Agentic Applications, NIST AI RMF, and MITRE ATLAS. You also build evals and observability for authorization latency, scope sprawl, delegation chains, and kill-switch verification, then turn recurring field gaps into reusable modules and roadmap items.
Notice what is missing: a demo-engineering flavor. This is a security-architecture job that happens to ship code. The Senior posting requires 7+ years of production software with on-call experience on high-throughput auth systems, fluency in OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, RFC 8693 token exchange, and DPoP, and experience with ReBAC/ABAC engines such as OPA, Cedar, or OpenFGA. Travel is stated as up to 35%, occasionally international. Both postings also ask for daily use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) and “high agency” founder-style ownership.
The third posting, “Forward Deployment Engineer, Okta for AI,” is a different animal. It asks for 10+ years in identity, security, or AI, prior CTO/Field CTO/Distinguished Architect experience, and credibility with CISOs and boards, and it includes conference and analyst-briefing duties. That reads closer to a field CTO than an engineer. If you are a hands-on builder, target the Senior or Principal seats.
Compensation
| Posting | Posted figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Senior FDE, Okta for AI Agents (CA ex-Bay Area, CO, IL, NY, WA) | $200K–$275K | Base salary |
| Forward Deployment Engineer, Okta for AI (SF Bay Area) | $255K–$383K | OTE (base + incentive) |
| Forward Deployment Engineer, Okta for AI (CA ex-Bay Area, CO, IL, NY, WA) | $206K–$342K | OTE (base + incentive) |
| Principal FDE, Okta for AI Agents (earlier US posting, now closed) | $269K–$369K | As listed on our job board |
Two cautions. The bases and OTEs are not comparable: the Senior band is base only, the third posting is base plus incentive with the split unstated. And the Principal Singapore posting publishes no range at all, so treat the US bands as US-only. Equity “where applicable” is mentioned but unquantified in every posting. Okta is a public company, so unlike a pre-IPO lab you can price RSUs at today’s stock price, which is a genuine advantage in negotiation. Ask for the grant value, vesting schedule, and the base/incentive split before you compare it to a lab offer.
The interview loop
No FDE-specific Okta interview has been published, and we would rather say so than pad a table with invented stages. What the postings do tell you is what will be tested. Expect protocol depth (be able to walk through a token exchange with act claims and explain why DPoP exists), an authorization design problem (model delegation across a chain of agents and say where you would enforce least privilege), and a customer scenario, such as a CISO who wants a kill switch and an audit trail for 1,500 agents by quarter end. The behavioral signal is “complex internal politics”: the Senior posting names it directly.
Prepare by reading the Cross App Access and MCP authorization specs end to end, and by building a small agent that authenticates through token exchange rather than a stored key. That one weekend project will outweigh most generic prep.
Who should apply
If you have run an identity or auth platform in production and can discuss agent risk without hand-waving, Okta is a rare chance to join the category’s incumbent just before it matters. If your background is general LLM application work with no auth depth, the 7+ year requirement and protocol list will screen you out; look at Sierra or Glean instead. And remember the earnings-call caveat: this is a bet on fiscal 2028, which means the team is small, the playbook is still being written, and you would be writing it.
