IIT Roorkee's PG Certificate in Forward Deployed AI Engineering: A 2026 Guide
If IIT Delhi’s FDE certificate is the depth play, IIT Roorkee’s is the speed-and-price play — three months, ₹45,000, and, unlike Delhi, actual hiring support bolted on. It’s marketed as the “world’s first academic program for Forward Deployed Engineers,” it carries a certificate from IIT Roorkee’s Continuing Education Centre (CEC), and it’s operated by the ed-tech firm Futurense. That last fact isn’t a knock, but it changes how you should read the program — so let’s go through it with numbers.

What you actually learn
The curriculum is six modules built on a no-code → low-code → full-code pedagogy: an FDE mindset and problem-structuring module (systems thinking, business-to-tech translation, problem decomposition); data and pipeline thinking; prompt engineering and LLM workflows; ML foundations and the model lifecycle; deep learning and NLP; and a final module on prototyping, deployment, and consulting that walks the PoV → PoC → MVP → deployment arc. There’s a “Futurense AI Clinic” component with live enterprise projects, and exposure to 20–30+ tools across LLM platforms, RAG, agent frameworks, and evaluation.
The honest read on depth: this is survey-level coverage of the right topics, not the production-grade depth of IIT Delhi’s 145-hour syllabus. Eighty-five hours over three months buys you a working orientation to the FDE stack and a portfolio-ready capstone — not the SOC 2/HIPAA/eval-harness rigor Delhi drills. For the price and the timeline, that’s a defensible trade, provided you go in knowing which one you’re buying.
Eligibility and admissions
You need a bachelor’s degree (minimum three years) in engineering, CS, IT, mathematics, or a related field with at least 50%, and Python fundamentals; MCA, M.Sc, M.Tech, MBA (with technical exposure), and BCA graduates qualify too. It’s open to fresh graduates and early-career professionals (0–3+ years), though one to two years of relevant experience is preferred. Admission runs on a rolling basis and gates on a 45-minute, MCQ-based qualifying test covering logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude, digital/AI awareness, and a situational-judgment section — non-technical enough that a prepared fresher can clear it. A two-week Bridge Course (advertised value ₹29,000, included free) is meant to level everyone up before classes start.
The two things to weigh
First: it’s a Futurense program with an IIT Roorkee certificate. IIT Roorkee’s CEC issues the certificate and Prof. Gaurav Dixit directs it, but the delivery, the AI Clinic, the placement machinery, and the job board are Futurense’s. This matters for one specific reason worth knowing before you enroll: Futurense also runs fde.academy, a separate, pricier eight-month FDE program. Two of the FDE options you’ll encounter in India are the same company at different price points. That’s not disqualifying — the placement engine is real — but you should know the org chart.
Second: treat the advertised salary bands as marketing, not forecasts. The program page lists roles from Forward Deployed Engineer (₹18–32 LPA) up through Staff FDE (₹95 lakh–1.6 crore). Those are aspirational category ranges, not placement outcomes for graduates of a three-month certificate. Who should take it
Take it if you’re a working engineer or a strong recent grad who wants an IIT-branded FDE credential, a structured push, and some placement support — without surrendering half a year of weekends or ₹2 lakh. The mock interviews and Futurense job-board access give it a hiring nudge that IIT Delhi’s course lacks.
