What they do
Northwood Space is a startup rebuilding earth-to-space connectivity — scalable ground stations and mission-networking for government and defense customers. It sits in the defense-tech wave alongside the new generation of space and national-security hardware companies, not the enterprise-SaaS crowd most FDE listings come from.
What “forward deployed” means here
This is deployment in its most literal form: embedding with government and defense customers on classified space communications, sensing, and data transport. The req wants 7+ years in customer-facing technical roles — solutions/systems engineering, mission operations, capture engineering — so the seat skews toward someone who has run real missions, not someone who has shipped web apps.
Comp & leveling
The DC seat is employer-listed at $200K, a single number rather than a band — competitive for defense-tech but below the AI-lab FDE seats. You're paid for domain and clearance scarcity, and the upside is early-stage equity plus proximity to a fast-moving government-infrastructure market.
Growth signals
One open role for now, but the signal is the category: when a ground-station startup puts the FDE title on classified mission work, forward deployment has escaped SaaS entirely. Watch for clearance requirements and additional mission-ops seats as government contracts land.
