Why it's interesting
OpenAI didn't just staff FDEs in-house — it spun up a whole subsidiary for the job. DeployCo is the OpenAI Deployment Company, funded with outside investors on the thesis that deployment, not model capability, is now the binding constraint on enterprise AI value. This founding FDE seat ($170K–$400K + equity, player-coach track) is a bet that FDE-as-a-business scales — distinct from OpenAI's own enterprise FDE role, and one of the clearest signals yet that the frontier labs see deployment as a company, not a function.
The role
Founding Forward Deployed Engineer at DeployCo ("The OpenAI Deployment Company"), a subsidiary of OpenAI built to deliver enterprise AI transformation at scale using OpenAI's models and products. You act as technical lead on high-stakes, ambiguous customer deployments, owning both technical and business outcomes end-to-end; guide deployment strategy and help define DeployCo's operating model; build reusable deployment primitives, tools, and playbooks; and ramp quickly toward management as a player-coach growing the team. Partners closely with OpenAI's core functions so field work informs the roadmap. Wants 4+ years of engineering/technical delivery, 0→1 experience building under ambiguity, and production-grade JavaScript or Python across frontend and backend.
