The company that named the discipline
Palantir builds Foundry and Gotham — data and decision platforms deployed inside governments and large enterprises. It effectively created and named Forward Deployed Software Engineering (FDSE) in the 2000s, and every other company's 'FDE' is a descendant of that model. If you want the canonical version of the job rather than a two-year-old experiment, this is the origin point.
What the job actually is here
You embed on-site with a customer and write production code against their messy real-world data and workflows, building on Palantir's ontology rather than around it. You own outcomes, not tickets — the deliverable is a working deployment the customer renews, not a merged PR. Travel and on-site intensity are high, and the operating model is mature and repeatable rather than improvised.
Comp: public-stock liquidity, not a frontier bet
The board shows roughly $200K–$400K total comp — below the frontier-lab headline top end, but Palantir is public (PLTR), so the equity portion is liquid on vest instead of locked in a private valuation waiting years for a secondary. Yes. Palantir's title is Forward Deployed Software Engineer, and it's the origin of the whole category — 'FDE' elsewhere is the same idea with a shorter name.
Do Palantir FDEs need a security clearance?
Commercial roles generally don't; many government and federal roles require a US Secret or TS clearance (or eligibility). A clearance widens the seats open to you and tends to lift comp.
Does Palantir or a frontier lab pay more?
