What they do
Scaled Cognition builds its own models and deployment platform for enterprise agents, led by APT-1 (Agentic Pretrained Transformer), aimed at customer-experience workflows where policy adherence matters. The founders — CEO Dan Roth and CTO Dan Klein, a UC Berkeley NLP professor — previously built Semantic Machines, which Microsoft acquired in 2018.
What “forward deployed” means here
You design and ship agents with enterprise customers in finance, healthcare, legal and operations, and you work directly with research on evals for agent reliability. That research loop is the differentiator: when a deployment breaks, the fix can land in the model, not just the prompt. It is also the risk — you are the proof point for the claim that APT-1 is more reliable than frontier LLMs.
